Arfueyu

«[...] que habita las oscuras noches de los oscuros bosques de la montaña astur. Aunque transita senderos y vadea torrenteras con gran agilidad durante todo el año, se hace más fácilmente visible al caer la noche en las postrimerías del solsticio de invierno, merced a la lumbre que porta. Viejo, montaraz, de larga barba blanca, modos animalescos y más ágil y astuto que un gato montés. De natural huraño, su carácter se dulcifica en esta época e incluso asiste a transeúntes extraviados.

Viste casaca ancha de arpillera y calzón de piel curtida, según unos, o de lino basto, según otros; fajín colorado, polainas de borrego prendidas con cordón de esparto y madreñas. Su luenga melena se eleva más de medio metro sobre su cabeza y cae a su pecho y espalda, y viene a estar formada por maraña de muérdago y cabellos duros y tiesos que más bien parecen ramas secas de roble. Porta callado alto sin refinar, que no es otra cosa que un brazo de castaño, del que pende un farol que nunca se ha visto sin lumbre.

Es entidad positiva y de origen incierto, como es costumbre en el elenco mitológico. Algunos tratadistas lo atribuyen a influencias del panteón romano sobre determinadas figuras naturales de la tradición celta. Otros hallan su raíz en diferentes etnias centro y noreuropeas cuyos influjos habrían llegado a esta tierra [...] durante los siglos VIII y IX, merced a lazos políticos y comerciales del Reino Astur con el Imperio Carolingio.»

"[...] who lives in the dark nights of the dark forests of the Asturian mountain. Although he transits paths and wading gullies with great agility throughout the year, he becomes more easily visible at dusk near the winter solstice, thanks to the lantern he carries. Old man, rough ranger, long white beard, cunning and more agile than a bobcat. Sullen character, he becomes more sociable at this time of year and even stray passers assists.

He dresses burlap tunic and pants wide leathery, according to some, or coarse linen, as others; red sash, gaiters of lamb tied with rope and wooden clogs. His long hair rises two feet above his head and falls on his chest and back, being formed by a tangle of mistletoe and hard and stiff hairs that look more like dried oak branches. He carries a cane unrefined high, which is not nothing but a branch of chestnut tree, from which hangs a lantern that has never been seen off.

He is a positive being with uncertain origin, as is often the case with the mythological cast. Some authors attribute this to the influence of the Roman pantheon on certain natural figures of the Celtic tradition. Others seek their roots in different Central and North European ethnicities whose influence would come to this land [...] in VIII and IX centuries, through trade and political ties between the Asturian Kingdom and the Charlemagne's empire."
